Tell us how and why you started your business:

Stephen and Josh are a father-and-son team who have always created together. Whether it was writing scripts for fun, directing short films when Josh was 11, or recording albums together.

In 2016, after a long career in Los Angeles as a music producer, Stephen relocated to Tulsa with the goal of starting an audio post-production company with Josh. The Audio Planet was born from the belief that world-class film audio could be created from anywhere: not just Los Angeles.

Since then, they have provided original music and audio post-production for films and projects featuring Martin Sheen, Andrea Bocelli, and Bear Grylls, while also recording ADR for major studio productions including Killers of the Flower Moon, Apple TV+’s Silo, Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Marvel’s What If…?.

How has your company grown to meet the needs of Oklahoma’s film industry over the last 3-5 years?

We started in Oklahoma primarily in the advertising world, providing audio and music for thousands of commercials over a five-year period. As Oklahoma’s film industry began to grow, more and more film and television work started coming through our doors.

Eventually, that work surpassed our commercial business entirely. Today, approximately 90% of what we do is for film and television, and we’ve continued expanding our capabilities to meet the needs of those productions, from dialogue editing, sound design, Foley, and ADR to original scoring and final theatrical mixing.

What are some of the benefits of basing your company in Oklahoma?

Oklahoma gives us a little more room and freedom to build something in a way that would be much more difficult in a market like Los Angeles. The cost of doing business is lower, but more importantly, it feels like the state genuinely wants the film industry to flourish.

There is a supportive and collaborative film community here, and we’ve been able to build a world-class facility while still enjoying the advantages of living and working in Oklahoma. We also love being part of an industry that is still growing and helping show that high-level post-production work can happen right here in the state.

Can you provide a highlight in how your company been impacted by film productions in Oklahoma?

ADR is probably one of the best examples. As film production began picking up in Oklahoma, we kept getting calls asking if we could record ADR. At the time, it wasn’t a service we offered, but there was clearly a need, so we learned it and built that capability into our studio.

Since then, we’ve recorded ADR for major studio projects including Stillwater, Cold Pursuit, Prey, Chicken Run, Final Destination Bloodlines, FX’s Reservation Dogs, and The Lowdown. What started as responding to a need in Oklahoma has become an important part of our business.

What are you working on now or next?

Right now, we’re gearing up for post-production on Flyover! We’re also about halfway through an untitled sports documentary series that is being developed with hopes of ultimately landing on a platform such as ESPN or Netflix.

In addition to that, a film called The One, which features Martin Sheen, is sit to release in theaters this November. We scored and did all sound design and mixing for the film.

Beyond those projects, we have several feature films and other productions moving toward post-production, so it’s shaping up to be an exciting year.

What are your tips for running a successful business in Oklahoma?

Networking has been especially important for us. We’ve attended countless film festivals, Coffee with Crew events, Chamber meetings, industry gatherings, and other opportunities to meet people and build genuine relationships.

We also strongly believe in sales and being proactive. We regularly reach out to filmmakers, producers, and companies across the country through cold calling and email campaigns. It sounds like a grind—and it is!—but some of those conversations have turned into real, paying projects and long-term relationships.

Our biggest advice is not to simply wait for work to find you. Get involved in the community, meet people, follow up, and don’t be afraid to introduce yourself and your company.
