Coat is a 5-piece psychedelic rock band out of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma that brought together members of OKC groups Computer Girl, Twiggs, Swim Fan, and Johnny Manchild. Their music spans a wide sonic landscape pulling inspiration from artists like “Angel Olsen” to groups like “The Oh Sees”.

How did you get started in the music industry?
Coat was formed by 5 friends who had all been playing in the music scene for years and wanted to put together a project for fun – without the egos and drama that often comes with playing in a group.
What is the highlight of your music career thus far?
We really enjoy being a part of the community, so any event where we feel like we’re making an impact is a big highlight for us. Our guitarist, Alex, spearheaded a fundraiser concert for Oklahoma Teachers which included a full album of local musician’s tracks. Our annual Coat Drive show and every Norman Music Festival would be other highlights.
What is your favorite Oklahoma music venue, music store, and/or recording studio?
We love The 51st Street Speakeasy, the Blue Note and Resonant Head. All their owners are really committed to the local music scene and also get some of the best up-and-coming touring bands. It’s truly two of the coolest things you can do when it comes to music and the community!
What is your favorite aspect of working in Oklahoma’s music industry?
We’re just grateful to be able to play music and maybe make a difference in some people’s lives, however small.
What are some tips for finding success as a music artist in Oklahoma?
Be authentic. People gravitate towards kindness and authenticity so surround yourself with the best players and people you can and just have fun. Success in music is connection–not profit.
What’s next for you in your music career?
We just released our debut album, “Animal Control” and now we’re working on our next!
